Latent Load Dominates
Plants transpire water through their stomata all day (and continue at lights-off), pushing moisture into the air. In grow rooms the latent load is typically equal to or greater than the sensible load – the opposite of a comfort building – so dehumidification, not cooling, is the defining function . Standard comfort air conditioners hit a temperature setpoint and shut off, leaving humidity behind – and they stop dehumidifying at lights-off exactly when transpiration continues.
VPD Is the Real Control Variable
Growers increasingly manage vapor pressure deficit (VPD) – the difference between moisture in the leaf and moisture in the air – rather than relative humidity alone, because RH means different things at different temperatures.
Mold and Crop Loss Risk
Excess moisture breeds botrytis (bud rot) and powdery mildew; failed yeast-and-mold tests have forced recalls and destroyed batches. Dehumidification is therefore contamination control, not a comfort setting.
Extreme Energy Intensity
Indoor cannabis facilities can use up to 10 times more energy per square foot than typical office space, with lighting and HVAC making up nearly most of the energy use; climate-control systems can consume a large share. Maturing markets and price compression are adding energy caps and carbon targets. Sealed vs. Ventilated Designs
Many indoor flower rooms are SEALED (“box inside a box”) and largely recirculating with CO2 enrichment, so outdoor-air exchange is minimal – which limits conventional ventilation energy recovery in the grow room itself. Greenhouses and some indoor designs DO exchange air with outdoors (ventilation for cooling, humidity, CO2, odor), and drying/curing and support spaces use ventilation – these are where air-to-air recovery applies.
