School & Universities

Deliver the fresh air classrooms need — while cutting the energy cost of ventilating high-occupancy spaces.

Energy Recovery for Schools & Universities

Healthier Learning Environments. Lower Energy Costs.

Classrooms are among the most densely occupied spaces in a school, making ventilation both essential and energy intensive. Providing fresh outdoor air to support occupant health and comfort can represent one of the largest HVAC energy loads across a campus.

Air-to-air energy recovery helps reduce that load by transferring energy between the building’s exhaust air and incoming outdoor air. As a result, schools can improve ventilation efficiency while reducing the energy required to condition outdoor air. Innergy Tech manufactures energy recovery wheels, sensible and enthalpy plate exchangers, and heat pipes, allowing the recovery technology to be matched to a variety of campus spaces, from classrooms and administrative areas to gyms and laboratories.

HIGH-OCCUPANCY VENTILATION & BUDGET PRESSURE

More Fresh Air, Tighter Budgets, Better Outcomes Expected

High Occupant Density Drives Large Outdoor-Air Volumes
Classrooms combine high occupancy with relatively limited floor area, creating significant ventilation requirements. Gymnasiums and other gathering spaces often require even greater amounts of outdoor air. Conditioning these outdoor-air volumes throughout the year can represent a substantial and ongoing energy demand for school facilities.

Indoor Air Quality and Student Performance
Healthy indoor air quality supports a productive learning environment. Schools continue to prioritize ventilation strategies that help maintain comfortable, well-ventilated spaces for students, teachers, and staff. Effective ventilation contributes to occupant comfort and supports overall indoor environmental quality.

Budget and Operating-Cost Pressure
School districts continually balance indoor air quality goals with budget constraints and operating costs. Providing consistent ventilation while managing energy consumption remains a key challenge for facility managers. Solutions that improve ventilation efficiency can help support both sustainability initiatives and long-term operating objectives.

Humidity and Mold Risk
Large amounts of outdoor air can introduce additional moisture into a building. Without proper humidity control, excess moisture may contribute to condensation, indoor comfort concerns, and conditions that can lead to mold growth. Effective dehumidification and moisture management strategies help maintain healthy indoor environments and protect building assets.

Variable Occupancy
School occupancy levels fluctuate throughout the day, week, and year. Ventilation systems that can adapt to changing occupancy patterns help provide outdoor air when and where it is needed while improving operational efficiency. Combining ventilation control strategies with energy-recovery technologies can help optimize indoor air quality and energy performance.

THE INNERGY TECH SOLUTION: MATCHING TECHNOLOGY TO THE SPACE

One Manufacturer, Four Recovery Technologies

Innergy tech offers multiple air-to-air energy recovery technologies that can be matched to different building types and ventilation requirements across a campus.

Energy Recovery Wheels: Energy recovery wheels provide both sensible and latent energy recovery and are well suited for classrooms, gymnasiums, assembly areas, and other comfort-ventilation applications where return air is suitable for energy recovery. Field-installed wheel options are available for retrofit applications, and passive dehumidification wheel configurations can support humidity-control objectives.

Enthalpy Plate Exchangers: Enthalpy plate exchangers provide total-energy recovery through a fixed-plate design with no moving parts. These systems can be a good option where a static energy recovery solution is preferred while still allowing heat and moisture transfer between airstreams.

Sensible Plate Exchangers: Sensible plate exchangers transfer heat between separated airstreams without moisture transfer. Their no-moving-parts design makes them suitable for applications where sensible energy recovery is desired and moisture transfer is either unnecessary or undesirable.

Heat Pipes: Heat pipes are passive energy recovery devices with physically separated airstreams and no moving parts. They are commonly used in laboratory and other exhaust applications where complete separation between supply and exhaust air streams is required. Heat pipe configurations are also available to support dehumidification strategies.

Selecting the Right Technology for Campus Facilities
Because educational campuses typically include a wide range of spaces, including classrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, laboratories, administration areas, and specialty spaces, different energy recovery technologies may be applied to different portions of the campus to meet ventilation, humidity-control, and operational objectives while supporting energy efficiency.

Benefits & Value Drivers

Lower Operating Cost on Ventilation
Educational facilities often require large amounts of outdoor air to support healthy indoor environments. Energy recovery helps reduce the energy required to condition that outdoor air, improving overall HVAC efficiency and supporting more cost-effective operation.

Supports Healthy, Well-Ventilated Classrooms
Providing fresh outdoor air is an important part of creating comfortable learning environments. Energy recovery technologies help make ventilation strategies more practical by reducing the energy impact associated with conditioning outdoor air.

Humidity and Moisture Management
Managing humidity is an important part of maintaining comfortable indoor environments and supporting building health. Energy recovery technologies can help moderate incoming-air moisture and support humidity-management strategies throughout educational facilities. Dedicated dehumidification solutions are also available for applications where moisture control is a priority.

Whole-Campus Technology Match
Because Innergy tech offers multiple energy recovery technologies, different solutions can be applied across classrooms, gymnasiums, laboratories, dormitories, administrative spaces, and other campus areas to support their unique ventilation and operational requirements.

New Construction and Retrofit Applications
Innergy tech solutions are available for both new construction and retrofit projects. A variety of configurations can be incorporated into existing facilities or new mechanical-system designs, helping address space constraints and project-specific requirements.

Performance and Documentation Support
Innergy tech provides performance data and application support to assist design teams, engineers, and facility stakeholders throughout the equipment selection and project-development process.
